Our History

The PEI Coalition for Women’s Leadership (prev. the PEI Coalition for Women in Government) was established with a mission to promote gender equity and empower women in their journey to obtain leadership roles across Prince Edward Island. Founded in 2004 with a group of dedicated volunteers, becoming incorporated in 2009, the Coalition emerged from a recognition of the underrepresentation of women in leadership positions within the province and aimed to address this disparity through advocacy, education, and community engagement.

From its inception, the Coalition has focused on several key areas, including skill development, mentorship, advocacy, and increasing the visibility of women leaders. By creating a supportive network, the Coalition has sought to inspire and encourage women to pursue leadership opportunities in various sectors, including politics, business, and community organizations.

As mentioned, a significant aspect of the Coalition's work has been its advocacy efforts, which have played a crucial role in effecting change at both the community and governmental levels. One notable achievement was the successful campaign to abolish evening sitting hours in the provincial legislature (2020). This victory not only made it easier for women and all genders with caregiving responsibilities to participate in politics, but also highlighted the Coalition's commitment to creating a more inclusive political environment.

The Coalition also provides resources and training designed to build confidence and competencies in women, combating imposter syndrome and self-doubt. This includes workshops, seminars, and networking events that connect women with established leaders and peers. Additionally, the Coalition actively collaborates with other organizations and stakeholders to promote policies and initiatives that support women's leadership and empowerment.

Over the years, the Coalition has celebrated numerous achievements, including the successful hosting of a Leadership Symposium in 2023, that highlight women’s contributions to society and initiatives aimed at increasing women’s representation in decision-making spaces. By fostering an inclusive community, the Coalition continues to advocate for systemic change, aiming to create a more equitable environment for future generations of women leaders in Prince Edward Island.

The Coalition remains committed to its vision of a society where the leaders are as diverse as the population, working tirelessly to dismantle barriers and champion the voices of women across the province. Through ongoing efforts, the Coalition is shaping a brighter future for women’s leadership in PEI.
